Fillibuster at Frist Center In the Trenton Times

Speaking of filibusters . . .

PRINCETON BOROUGH - Students at Princeton University have staged a demonstration that's got everyone talking - and talking and talking.

Several students have organized a mock-filibuster to protest Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist's recent proposal to eliminate judicial filibustering in the U.S. Senate.

Protesters are taking on Frist on his home turf. A 1974 Princeton graduate, Frist served on the board of trustees for 14 years and is one the University's biggest donors.

The mock-filibuster, which has been going on day and night since Tuesday morning, has taken place in front of the Frist Campus Center, which Frist helped fund with a $25 million gift in 1997. One of the senator's sons, Harrison, is a junior at Princeton.

"This is not a personal attack on Bill Frist," said sophomore Asheesh Siddique, a protest organizers. "This is a disagreement with his policy and his effort to invoke the `nuclear option.' "

The so-called "nuclear option" is the name given to the Senate majority leader's proposed rule change, which would decrease the number of votes needed to end a filibuster from 60 to 51, rendering judicial confirmations a simple majority vote.

"What Frist and the Republicans are trying to do is really radical," said protest organizer Juan Melli-Huber, a third year mechanical engineering graduate student. "They're breaking with hundreds of years of Senate tradition, because only 95 percent of their judges were confirmed."

Protesters said Democrats have used the filibuster to block only seven of President Bush's judicial nominees while confirming 207 of them.
