I didn't make my point as well as I should have

I worked a long time on that open letter to Jon Corzine and failed to emphasize my main point. My bad. Sorry. I appreciate what Senator Corzine is doing with respect to energy issues. I also concede that the Senator is a masterly businessman and can negotiate with environmental activists and business people with great skill and leadership. But somewhere in all of that response by Mr Fisher, the notion of involving the schools got lost. I happen to believe that the young people attending New Jersey's schools are an extraordinary pool of creativity and intelligence that is waiting to be inspired by a message that involves them in our society. We have a problem with apathy by young voters and, in our schools, apathy with respect to education. For all the flapping around about why our schools are failing in this country (and NJ is near the top of the list of states with good school systems, by the way-last I saw, MA was first and NJ was third), it isn't the teachers' faults and it is less a matter of parental involvement than you might think. But these are different times than when I went to school. There are endless fascinating distractions and amusements. Let's use that to our advantage and get the youngsters, from early grade school on up through college, involved in solving the energy crisis (and it is a crisis). That's why I brought up John Kennedy and the race to space. That's the kind of inspirational leadership I was talking about. I believe that if Senator Corzine were to incorporate that message into his campaign and into his governorship, it would lead to a Renaissance in our school system and also involve young people to the extent that they will emerge from high school as involved citizens, voters, and New Jerseyans. That's what I'm talkin' about.
