Networks

That's true. The time was changed tonight to please the networks.

Most presidents would have the sense to call on network reporters as time runs out. You know that the networks wouldn't cut off their own people.

Sweeps Week

It's "sweeps week" for network television. Ratings for shows this week provide the basis for advertising rates for the next quarter (I believe).

ABC is running a Special Program, with continuing coverage. They had brief interviews with Lindsay Graham (R) and Joe Biden (D). Graham is one of the few remaining sensible Republicans (the Senate is generally less fanatical than the House), but he strained to put the best possible interpretation on Bush's vague but glittering generalities.

Biden said he didn't hear anything really new in what Bush put forth. Unusually straightforward commentary from Biden, who tends to slip around the edges, searching for "nuance."

super obnoxious

Doing a press conference during sweeps week with no particularly pressing reason?

Joe Biden

I disagree that he is usually not on target.  Joe Biden is my second favorite Dem - Howard Dean is my first.  I've seen Joe Biden on many of the Sunday morning news shows and IMHO he speaks his piece against Bush clearly and concisely - there is no second guessing on his feelings toward the Bush administration.

A few of my favorite Democrats

We may have to agree to disagree on this, loucity. There are lots of Democrats to be fond of, following Howard Dean, even in the Senate. Harry Reid is proving himself a Sly Fox in leading our folks, and I'd be remiss if I didn't wave the flag for NJ's great senators, Frank Lautenberg and, of course, Jon Corzine.

Of course, the traditions of the Senate call for comity and mutual respect, so senators often hedge or qualify their criticisms of each other, and of the president. Still, my impression is that Joe Biden has been more likely than others to accept the way the right wing frames an issue (see Lakoff on framing, http://www.berkeley.edu/news/media/releases/2003/10/27_lakoff.shtml if you're not familiar with this concept).

Or maybe I'm feeling particularly cool toward Joe Biden right now because of his support for that atrocious Bankruptcy Bill. This is probably not the place to get into that discussion, though.
