What was the deal with the drinking age

I didn't even know that it was an issue.  And it looked really bad that the Sen did not know the drinking age in NJ and 48 other states is 21.

So Corzine doesn't regularly drink with 18 year olds.  Big deal.

Drinking Age and Federal Highway Funding

Wasn't the whole reason that states went to 21 because the federal government linked highway money to up-ing the drinking age to 21?

I can see the point that if you are shipping soldiers out to die for the country, then they ought to have the right to drink, vote, etc., but from the state's point of view, you need highway dollars, and drunk driving fatalities increase with a lower drinking age.

If you're going to lower the drinking age to 18, you need to simultaneously find some way of educating college students about the dangers, because the abuse, trauma and death that results from the excesses there is a serious problem.

That Was Really Bad!

The Senator looked like he got the wind knocked out of him when Gabe Pressman asked him that question. Sen. Corzine  commited a cardinal sin in this debate. As rediculous as it was to not know something as common as your state's legal drinking age in the first place, you NEVER admit you don't know or come across as confused in a debate. One that is aired on national television Nontheless! It leaves a lot of undecided voters wondering what other common policies he might be out of the loop on.

This was NEVER at any point a campaign issue on either side and I firmly believe that Gabe pressman asked this question way out of deep left field for the sole purpose of testing one's knowledge of state policy, aka, a trick question.

Any debator knows that if you don't know something like a legal drinking age you B.S. your way through it, ie: "Yes, I do believe that", or , "No I don't think that policy should be changed."
It sure did wonders for Bush didn't it?

With the race as tight as it is now each candidate is being watched under a microscope and there's very little room for error. I think this a bigger mistake than the majority of  us Corzine supporters think it is.
