Why the Record and the Ledger let us down...

Your analysis makes sense on paper...and I agree with the points you make; however we must ask ourselves what is driving these normally friendly boards to betray their stated predilections?

Lest any Forrster folk are reading this, let me say first off that I support Corzine, have volunteered, and will vote for him...and further; I believe Doug Forrester is a corrupt con man.  He is, essentially, a Republican ideologue whose election whould only serve to reinforce and strengthen the Bushist agenda whch would be a distaster for NJ, the nation, and the planet.

A few minutes ago Mike Kelly, of the Record, was interviewed by Brian Leher on WNYC radio.   It seems that the Record felt that Corzine didn't coherently articulate his positions in their interviews and didn't impress them with how strong/serious he would be as a governor in implementing his stated ideals.

I hate to say this; but they have a point.  In comparison to Forrester, Jon Corzine is a Saint!!!  But I truly wish he would take these two betrayals by two major newspapers as an opportunity to do something unscripted and radical.

I believe Jon Corzine should hold a major news conference and allow all questions at length.  He should be willing to spend four or five hours (if that's what it takes) speaking honestly and at length about anything that comes up.

Jon is not a glib slick packaged con man like Forrester.  He is not good at speaking in petty phoney sound bites that are scripted and designed by consultants working off poll results and focus groups.

Again, Forrester is very good at being a lying phony; most Republicans are...we can't beat them at that game and we should not want to.  ( The closest we came to a slick candidate was Bill Clinton and he was a great/extraordinary/tragic exception to the rule.)

I believe Jon Corzine will likely still win by a few points if he doesn't take this advice; but I also believe that he would kick ass and win by 15 points if he took the risk of ignoring the highly paid "professionals" he "consults" with.

A gutsy sincere performance would allow NJ voters to truly see Jon's spirit as a human being and not just as a nice guy with gobs of money to spend.

Also, a big win would generate coat tails that will bring along upset victories in some of the closer legislative races.

If Corzine does win and doesn't do it in the grand gutsy righteous way I propose; I pray he finds a way to take the critiques to heart and governs with a ruthless toughness that eliminates the corruption in all parties and throughout the state.

If Corzine loses by a hair; it'll be because he was never allowed to BE HIMSELF!!!

The expensive consultants are little more than hacks and whores who cynically degrade politics to the lowest possible levels and destroy the essence of the democratic spirit.  They claim their dirty tactics "work", and they are right in a perverse short term sense; but the eventual result of a commodification of politics is a loss of soul/humanity/spirit/meaning in the candidtates and in the electorate....and THAT is a threat to the survival of democracy in the long run.

Finally, the more superficial our campaigns become; the more Republicans will win.  Appeals to materialism, selfishness, and unreasoning fear are what supports Bushism.
